As a much experienced packing savant, I’m here to share the most valuable Dollar Tree items for a simplistic moving experience. We’re all so conditioned these days to jump on the internet and select “add to cart,” when a better option for our hard earned money is a quick drive to our local Dollar Tree. Let’s not get confused here, I am a massive proponent of online shopping, but I am an even bigger proponent of stretching my dollars when necessary. And with Dollar Tree’s standalone price point of $1.25 per item, each of these products are absolutely worth your investment to make your next move as coordinated as possible.

MARKERS

first, you already know this, but Markers are a must, must, must have when it comes time to pack up your home for a move. I always make sure to grab a (2) pack of jumbo black permanent markers for labeling boxes, as well as (2) fine point tipped markers for labeling ziplock bags and packing lists. Markers are an item you don’t want to forget, and Dollar Tree has ample options for you to choose what’ll work best for you.

kids scissors

second, A pack of kids scissors are valuable for a variety of reasons. First, these are a durable and safe alternative to a traditional box cutter. They’re just sharp enough to cut through heavy duty packaging tape, but the rounded blades are also dull enough to not break the skin on immediate contact. Bonus points for being kid friendly. Additionally, each scissor is accessorized by a brightly colored handle which will prove to be a huge help when you put the scissors down for a brief moment, get distracted, and then have to spot them in a sea of tissue paper and cardboard. Lastly, it’s a (2) pack. So you’re not only getting more for your money, but you’ll be able to accomplish double the work by offering the spare scissors to your unpacking buddy. Win, win.

masking tape

next, Masking tape from the Dollar Tree is the best value when it comes to  labeling, and there is a lot to label when you’re moving! A black marker on cardboard works just fine, but I prefer a pop of color to standout on the bleakness of those boxes. Masking tape was made for labeling, and it holds well to cardboard too. It’s certainly not the most aesthetic way of labeling, but this is moving we’re talking about, none of it is aesthetic. Let’s just keep the process as practical and as simple as it needs to be for our own sanity.

trash bags

okay, Real talk, the trash bags from the Dollar Tree aren’t the most durable when it comes to actually loading them with trash. These sheets of plastic are a bit thin, have limited durability, and start to tear all when faced with pressure. Yet, I still buy at least (2) rolls of tall drawstring trash bags with every move we undertake. The real value of the trash bags is to serve as a protective layer for your clothes, blankets, towels, and other linens that you’ll want to keep clean while stowed away in boxes. Simply open up a trash bag; drape all the clothes hanging in your closet; secure the drawstrings around the hangers; and just like that, you’ve avoided having to fold all your hanging clothes into a box.

dryer sheets

In conjunction with trash bags, adding Dollar Tree dryer sheets to each box and bag you pack will keep your belongings smelling a bit less musty. Moving is traditionally not a temperature controlled experience. Your household goods will likely move from your home, to a truck, to a warehouse, to another truck, and then finally your new home. Certainly not a direct point A to point B route. Either way, when items are in transit, smells just seem to accumulate. It’s never unbearable, but cardboard keeps a very distinct smell that I aim to minimize as best I can. Scented dryer sheets do just that. Yes, it’s a temporary solution, but its a valuable help!

antibacterial wipes

also, Antibacterial wipes are a great addition to add to your car’s glove compartment when you’ve got a move or a long roadtrip ahead of you. From unsavory rest stops, sticky toddler hands, and loading and unloading dry moving boxes, antibacterial wipes offer you a quick refresh when you don’t have immediate access to soap and water. A pack of (30) for only a $1.25 is absolutely worth it!

thank you cards

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: please tip your movers! These individuals are in service to you, your personal belongings, and your most cherished memories; shouldn’t something like that be rewarded? The choice is of course yours, but I think you’d be silly not to extend some gratitude towards those individuals who have provided such a labor intensive service to you and your family.

With Dollar Tree thank you card packs ranging from 4- 10 units per pack, your $1.25 investment is a valued purchase. I use thank you cards to distribute tips to each mover who helps us pack up our old home, as well as those who help us unpack at our new home. These individuals will very likely be different people, so if you will be extending gratuities, remember to have cash on hand for both sides of the journey.

paper goods

Once your kitchen is all packed up, and you’re left wondering what your options are for dinner, having on hand Dollar Tree paper plates, bowls, and plastic utensils will be an absolute lifesaver. Whether you’re having take-out or cooking one last meal, no dishes means an easy clean up. And an easy clean up is always welcomed after a long day of packing and unpacking.

parts box

If you’re confused by the term “parts box,” let me explain. Every time you disassemble any piece of furniture, or even remove nails from your wall, you’ll be surrounded by nuts, bolts, and a collection of tiny pieces that you will absolutely have no safe place to keep. That is, unless you grab a parts box. The tupperware aisle at your local Dollar Tree, hosts plastic containers in all shapes and sizes. I have a large cylinder container with a locking lid that securely keeps all valuable pieces together.

More importantly, i advise storing each individual set of nuts and bolts into a labeled snack sized baggy. the baggies will be what you store in your parts box, to keep everything together and organized for when it comes time to rebuild your furniture.

zippered snack bags

Oh, and the above mentioned zippered snack bags can obviously be found right at Dollar Tree. And since you’ve already picked up a fine point tipped permanent marker, creating clear labels will also be a breeze. Organization is the absolute key to maintaining your sanity when relocating to a new home.

reusable gloves

When we first arrived at our most recent home, I was severely annoyed with the lack of cleaning the previous owners executed before they vacated the property. Upon arrival, I was scrubbing built on grime off the oven, removing lime from the toilet bowls, and clearing away food splatter from the kitchen baseboards. Not major cleaning disasters, but definitely annoying to show up somewhere and have to clean up someone else’s messes. Bleh! All that to say, since you never really know the actual cleanliness of a new place until you get there, a pair of reusable gloves will slightly soften the blow of having to fix another person’s nasty mistakes.

to conclude, Dollar Tree is by far the best place to get all your obvious, and not so obvious, valuable moving supplies. I appreciate the convenience of one-stop-shop shopping, and the value of these products can’t be beat. Since we move so frequently, I always save and store any remaining supplies for our next go around, so nothing ever goes to waste. If you have a move coming up, let this shopping list be your guide, and let me know in the comments any other moving tips you value most.
